JAKARTA, Feb 1 Asia Pulse - The Indonesian government will soon declare bird flu outbreaks in the country a national disaster owing to the fact that the H5N1 virus has caused an endemic disease which is spreading on a national scale, a minister said.
"The president has indicated that the bird flu outbreaks constitute a national disaster that must be overcome," State Minister for National Development Planning/Head of the National Development Planning Board Paskah Suzetta said here on Wednedday.
Paskah said the bird flu situation in the country was already meeting the criteria to be classified as a national disaster. The disease could no longer be localized and had already taken a high toll of human victims.
"Even regions which we thought had remained free from the disease have proven to be affected by the virus such as regionss in the southern part (of the country)," he said.
Because the disease was to be declared a national disaster, the government would allocate unlimited funds from the state budget, ...
