Byline: Nation 'already meets Erika III rules', writes Andrew Spurrier
FRANCE has dramatically improved its port state inspection regime and is already meeting the requirements of the European Union's yet to be implemented Erika III maritime safety package, says transport minister Dominique Perben.
Erika III proposes improving the quality of port state controls and concentrating them on ships likely to pose safety problems instead of simply requiring states to inspect 25% of ships entering their ports.
Mr Perben claimed, however, that French port state inspectors already had at their disposal information systems which allowed them to concentrate their efforts on ships likely to pose problems.
'In this way France is anticipating the application of the new European ship inspection regime, presented by the commission at the end of 2005 as part of the Erika III package,' he said.
