BRAZILIAN President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva yesterday opened a R$504bn ($236.5bn) public-private spending programme designed to accelerate growth in the world's ninth largest economy at the official signing of a $1.2bn contract to build 10 suezmaxes at a new shipyard in Suape.
Three thousand people turned out to watch as the president of Petrobras' shipping and logistics arm, Transpetro, Sergio Machado, finally put ink to paper after one of the longest running shipbuilding sagas of recent history.
'We have dreamed about this for 20 years,' said Mr Machado. 'This is a moment that is going to move the country.'
The 42-tanker newbuilding programme for Petrobras' shipping and logistics arm was first floated in 2004 but has been plagued by delays due to legal challenges, a shortfall in financing and last year's presidential elections.
