Pedestrian runs into car

At Hitchin County Court recently a motorist was awarded GBP26 10s 1d damages and costs against a pedestrian who was said to have run into his car. The motorist, William Brown, of Conquest Close, Hitchin, claimed extensive damage to the front of the car. The pedestrian, Leading Aircraftman Paul Walker, of the RAF station at Henlow, Bedfordshire, had only minor injuries, it was stated. Judge Campbell spoke of "this unequal contest between a motor car made of steel and iron and a man made of flesh and blood." He said that it was an unusual type of case, but there was no reason why a motorist, who had suffered damage as a result of a pedestrian should not claim damages.

20 Years Ago - Lloyd's reform deadline set

Lloyd's underwriting agents have expressed doubts that such a tight timetable can be adhered to. Chairman Peter Miller said last Thursday that the Council of Lloyd's would be meeting to agree a response to points in the Neill Report. Mr Miller confirmed that Lloyd's will seek to increase the number of outside members on the Council without more ado. David Coleridge, chairman of R W Sturge, the largest combined members' and managing agency in the Lloyd's market, dismissed as "very stupid" the idea that Lloyd's could implement the reforms proposed within a year.
