Byline: Tom Jones, partner, Thompsons Solicitors.
Richard Harvey, the Aviva chief executive who is taking a "gap year" to work on development projects in Africa, is to be congratulated for his compassionate and philanthropic spirit.
By all accounts, he is genuinely committed to doing his bit to help combat poverty and has a track record for giving a sizeable chunk of his salary to charity.
It is refreshing that an insurance company boss is prepared to set an example but it is the organisations that need to be taking the lead, for it is collective rather than individual action that makes the difference.
Aviva does pretty well. The group made an operating profit of nearly GBP3bn in 2005. It has used a little of this profit in some laudable ways, including committing GBP700,000 to tsunami relief work in Asia (GBP200,000 of which was given by staff).
It has donated a sizeable amount to UK and worldwide-based charities and community development projects.
