The UK government will face legal action from the European Commission over its failure to implement the Environmental Liability Directive by 30 April.
The government has also been accused of downplaying the importance of the directive and for delaying the start of the consultation process until 1 December 2006. The confusion over the directive's implementation was highlighted last week when the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs extended the length of the consultation process by 12 days.
Bob Martin, director of Aon's environmental and consulting solutions practice, said: "The ELD has been given little profile by Defra. It seems they just snuck it in with little more than a press release. I consider this very frightening."
