The use of juries at trial to decide civil claims against the police should be banned, a leading barrister has declared.
According to William Waldron, QC of Exchange Chambers, the government must remove trial by jury in civil claims against the police force, as they will often find against the police, simply when they think something "doesn't feel right" or if something does not appear to have been done by the book. "A jury can look at evidence, which is often compiled for a different purpose, and be persuaded that it has an importance it simply does not have," he said. "A judge looking at the same evidence would put it in its proper context."
