Broking giant Aon is calling for the industry to consider setting up an environmental equivalent of Pool Re.
The case for establishing a reinsurer has been enforced by the implementation of the Environmental Liability Directive, which will increase environmental exposures for businesses.
Bob Martin, director of Aon's environmental and consulting solutions practice, said: "In the UK any legal entity that owns property on contaminated land could be buying into a potential legacy claims tail and may be held liable in the future."
