A caretaker for a piece of property in Vallejo, California, William Paul, arrived at the property with his friend Roger on October 27. As they pulled up, a young woman got out of a parked SUV and began screaming for help. Paul grabbed a shotgun that he keeps with him because the area is unsafe--burglars regularly hit his mobile home on the property--and investigated. At that time, a man ran out of the marsh that is next to the road. The caretaker fired a warning shot into the air to stop the man's flight, and the other man fired three shots at Paul before escaping in the SUV.

Paul subsequently learned that the woman who had screamed was not alone. Her employer was still in the marsh where the man had just taken her. The woman with whom Paul was speaking was a maid, and she and her employer were ...
