Mickey Massey remembers the moment that turned it all around for Sarasota High School's boys soccer team.
It wasn't a spectacular goal, or a diving save, or even a referee's call that went the Sailors' way.
It was a late school bus driver.
"The bus showed up late for an away game, and Coach (Aaron McFarland) decided to have a team meeting," Massey said. "We talked about goals. We talked about winning the district and we talked about getting to the Final Four."
The bus arrived -- and so did the Sailors' ship at the Class 6A state tournament.
Massey, a 6-foot-1, 170-pound senior, was the catalyst of a most unlikely run, scoring 14 goals and handing out 24 assists from his center midfield position as Sarasota won nine of 10 matches to earn a shot at nationally No. 1-ranked Miami Sunset for the state title.
That didn't turn out so well, a nightmarish, record-setting 8-0 drubbing. But the fun was in the chase.
A defender for three years -- albeit, one with Division I-level ability and a national resume that includes tests against the likes of teen star Freddy Adu -- moved to midfield. Fellow senior Mike Alexander, another star defender, moved to the front line.

It's not all about him, and Mickey gets that."
Fifteen of Massey's assists set up scores by either Alexander (29 goals) or Mete Ozkan (22). For his accomplishments this season, the four-year varsity starter is the Herald-Tribune's Player of the Year.
One of their coach's goals was 90 goals -- as a team -- but the Sailors lost three of four matches during a 4-4 start and stood 11-6-2 before a 3-1 victory Jan. 19 over 5A, District 11 champion Lakewood Ranch.…
