IN A SMALL TOWN not far from where I live is a rather unusual monument. It is a water-metering device known as the Dethridge Wheel. For anyone who has travelled through the irrigation districts of south=eastern Australia, such wheels are a common sight. Every farm has such a meter on its channel outlet. The meter wheel was invented in Victoria by John Stewart Dethridge in 1910. Dethridge was an engineer who, in 1911, was appointed Commissioner of the State Rivers and Water Supply Commission in Victoria.
