QUADRANT FIRST fetched breath, fifty years back, in the eastern fringe of what was then a bohemian or arts quarter of Sydney. It ran from the Con across to The Rocks, from Hunter Street down to the Quay. Norman Lindsay used to have a studio in Bridge Street. Nearby were Bryant's Playhouse, the New Theatre, the Julian Ashton Art School, Smith's Weekly, the Bulletin, Angus & Robertson the publisher, and Tyrrell's second-hand bookshop. We are sitting in that historic precinct now, on the site of Jim Buckley's bohemian Newcastle Hotel, long since demolished to make way for this splendid palace.
