Cabinet minister Jack Straw has condemned a possible ban on Humberside Fire and Rescue Service using stepladders to fit smoke alarms as "barmy".

The Leader of the Commons was challenged by claims the region's firefighters had been hit with the ban after advice from safety regulators.

Shadow Commons leader Theresa May criticised the "utter stupidity" of the stepladder ban.

Mrs May said: "Health and safety rules mean firemen have been stopped from going up ladders to fit smoke alarms.

"You couldn't make it up if you tried." Mr Straw said if the reports were true the ruling was "barmy".
