VT Halter Marine, Pascagoula, Miss., recently hosted a launching ceremony for the Army's latest addition to its Tank-automotive and Armaments Command--the Robert Smalls--a 313'X60'X19' logistic support vessel (LSV).
The vessel is named after Robert Smalls, who was born into slavery and became the first African-American captain of a U.S. vessel.
Upon completion, the $25 million LSV will be used to carry more than 2,000 tons of deck freight, such as combat vehicles and armament, anywhere in the world. The Robert Smalls will have a range of 5,500 nautical miles. LSVs usually operate along remote underdeveloped coastlines and inland waterways, transfer cargo from deep-draft ships to shore, and assist in unit deployment and relocation.

"The Army is a long-term marine customer and more than 50 percent of the vessels in their fleet have been built at our shipyards," said VT Halter's CEO Butch King. "Designing and building the LSV has given us a clear understanding of the Army's logistical needs that will translate well to the applications of the future, including the fast theater support vessels."
When the LSV is completed, it will feature a three-piece 76'X18' articulating bow ramp and bow visor from Huber Inc. The ramp and visor are articulated by 3,000-psi hydraulic cylinders. Also aboard will be a Hatlapa 560 beach retraction winch powered by a 150-hp motor. The winch is rated at 500' per min. at 7,400 Ibs. per ft. Its maximum pulling ability is 125,000 Ibs. per ft. In addition, the LSV will carry a Fassmer SOLAS-certified rescue boat.
