Holy Music 
(after Rilke) 
 
      Where does harmony go 
   when the rain in your heart beats hard, 
        when the tall dry late summer grasses 
 
      leached of green, sway 
   as if to music only they can hear, 
        as if to the sounds of water deep 
 
      in the ground? If you were an instrument, 
   what would you be? A harp on a hillside 
        in a land of perennially long summer evenings? 
 
      A cello ...
