JOSE MOURINHO will hope Sir Alex Ferguson's newly-acquired bus pass won't see him waving from an open-top one at the end of the season. Fergie on a celebration journey around Manchester in May would be the worst possible nightmare for Mourinho in 2007. The Premiership trophy held high by Ferguson and perhaps the Champions League tucked underneath his other arm - the two trophies Mourinho wants most of all. Ifthey go to Manchester United, then it might just see Chelsea manager Mourinho make a hasty retreat from English football. 'The Special One' doesn't do failure. He couldn't live with finishing second. Not after all that boasting, bluff and confidence. Not after telling us it would be his side top at Christmas. We love Mourinho in so many ways, yet the very nature of his personality means he is there to be shot at. Fergie, turning into the New Year, has both barrels trained on his rival. How Ferguson, 65 yesterday, is enjoying this. It is just his kind of battle - on top with an outstanding team and the other man under pressure. He is master of the war of words and will twist the knife if Chelsea continue to falter. What Mourinho has to realise is that he has helped inspire the old master. His antics on and off the pitch have re-lit the Fergie fire. Just when the game thought he was about to spend more time in his wine cellar, Ferguson has uncorked a new vintage. Under the nose of the champions, he has built a winning team again. His man-management of Cristiano Ronaldo after the Portuguese winger returned from the World Cup as Public Enemy No.1 was quite superb. He brought Wayne Rooney and Ronaldo back together and they have been so instrumental in United's impressive season so far. He has found a defensive rock in Nemanja Vidic and the form ofPaul Scholes and Ryan Giggs has been consistently dangerous. If he finally signs Owen Hargreaves from Bayern Munich now the January transfer window is open, it can only boost United's chances of getting the title back. For all the pluses for United, we can only find minuses for Chelsea. The New Year represents the biggest test of Mourinho's career. With success comes expectancy and everyone - players and fans - is looking at him for answers.
