FIERCE storms caused havoc for millions of Brits celebrating New Year. Torrential downpours, electrical storms and gale-force winds of up to 80mph ruined many festivities. Scotland and northern England suffered the worst of the weather, although areas further south including Devon were also hit. Fireworks displays in Liverpool were postponed until Friday night. And similar extravaganzas in Newcastle were called off yesterday afternoon as storms battered the area. Celebrations for around 25,000 revellers in Glasgow's George Square were also cancelled. Even the world-famous Hogmanay street party in Edinburgh was in doubt until organisers gave it the go-ahead late yesterday.
