SEOUL, Jan. 2 Asia Pulse - Koreans who experienced financial and other problems in 2006 are pinning their hopes on the upcoming year of the pig, known as the guardian of wealth and happiness.
This year is exceptional as it is the year of the golden pig, which only comes around once every 600 years, according to fortune tellers.
The pig is the 12th and final animal in the Asian zodiac. It governs the direction west-northwest, which translates in the 24-hour day as 9-11 p.m., hence its token status as guardian of the house against prowling evildoers.
Koreans cherish the animal as a symbol of wealth and prosperity, but it has many more positive and negative characteristics.
On the positive side, the animal is regarded as the origin of good luck and fortune. It was considered as having supernatural powers, and dreams that featured the pig were usually interpreted as good omens.
The negative associations are well-documented: greediness, dirtiness, idleness and stupidity.
One of the oldest domesticated - farm - animals, the pig was once regarded as a sacred being and offered as a sacrifice to the gods. This also endowed the animal with the status of god's messenger, having the power to reject evil spirits and foretell the future.
