Dec. 31--And to think, Duke could have spoiled all of this. It could have ruined things early and sent Wake Forest down a path that might not have led to the ACC championship and the Orange Bowl. The Blue Devils finished 0-12 and will start next season with a 20-game losing streak, but they had the Deacons on the ropes at Groves Stadium on Sept. 9. They outgained and outplayed the Deacons and were in position to win when Joe Surgan lined up for a 28-yard field-goal attempt on the game's final play.
