Following two deaths and dozens of injuries, including a broken neck and a punctured lung, the Consumer Product Safety Commission has recalled thousands of inflatable water-sport tubes designed to become airborne when being pulled by a powerboat.
The recall involves approximately 19,000 Sportsstuff Wego Kite Tubes, which were sold from Oct. 1, 2005, through July 11, 2006, by marine distributors and other retailers for $500 to $600.
The Wego Kite Tube is a bright yellow, 10-foot-wide, circular inflatable craft that's typically towed behind a powerboat. A rider in the tube becomes airborne by pulling on handles attached to the floor. Other identifying information on the tube includes model 53-5000, printed near the valve; black warning stripes; and a cover bearing a skull and crossbones and the words "Never fly higher than you are willing to fall." In addition to the 2 deaths, there have been 39 reports of injuries, 29 requiring medical treatment, linked to the tube. Other injuries include those to the face, neck, and back.
