At their first meeting, in 1753 at the Bunch of Grapes Tavern in Boston, the nine proprietors who had recently bought 28,357 acres in northern Massachusetts, the last undeveloped landmass in Worcester County, voted unanimously to name the town Royallshire to honor Isaac Royall Jr. (1719-1781), the most affluent and philanthropic of the proprietors. (1) Royall had spent his youth on his father's sugar plantation on Antigua in the West Indies and in 1737 had moved with his family to Med-ford, Massachusetts. When his father, whose wealth was acquired trading in sugar, rum, and slaves, died two years later, Royall inherited a considerable fortune and a grand house on the west ...
