Christians and Tyrants is a comparative study of the "literal" and "literary' witness offered by three Christian martyrs. The structure of Jamie Scott's book is straightforward. An introductory chapter briefly recounts the circumstances in which Boethius, More, and Bonhoeffer died--Boethius in the sixth century on order of the Roman Emperor Theodoric, More in the sixteenth century on command of King Henry VIII of England, and Bonhoeffer in the twentieth century under Adolf Hitler. Chapters 2 through 4 explore the "testimony" of Boethius, More, and Bonhoeffer. These chapters contain discussions of religion and politics in the early literary work of each man, followed by exceedingly lengthy expositions of each of their prison writings, and concluding with an analysis of their lived and written testimonies.
