The seventeenth century represents the golden age of Spanish frame making, perhaps not surprisingly since it was also the age of the great Spanish painters Sanchez-Cotan, El Greco, Velazquez, Zurbaran, Murillo, Ribera, and Valdes Leal, to name just a few. At the beginning of the seventeenth century, Spanish paintings were essentially religious, marked by splendor and sobriety. Even many portraits, still lifes, and landscapes were related to devotional art.
