Vincent van Gogh can be a painter difficult to label. There is a view that he was a postimpressionist, even though that term was not coined until many years after his death. Another opinion is that he was, in fact, the first expressionist. It is this latter school of thought that is explored in an exhibition at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam until March 4, 2007. Called Vincent van Gogh and Expressionism, its aim is to show that his influence is evident in the works of many expressionists, particularly as those painters emulated his use of pure and bright colors, emphatic brushwork, and contrasting color combinations.
