Italy can with some justification lay claim to being a vital link in the story of Western civilization. The Roman Empire was built on the accomplishments of the Greeks, and after the medieval period it was Italy that gave birth to and nurtured the Renaissance. An exhibition entitled At Home in Renaissance Italy, on view at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London until January 7, 2007, provides a detailed look at the wealthy urban domestic interior in Tuscany and the Veneto during this flourishing period.
