In his book, OK Means Opportunity Knocking, Albert Mensah gives us eight steps for "making the most of every chance encounter." Our dreams are not something we achieve over-night, and we often overlook opportunities because they are masquerading as something else.
Attitude
Did you know that 30 percent of all millionaires in the U.S. are immigrants? Mensah says that nobody immigrates here by accident; they all come with the goat of achieving that "American Dream". The reason that they are able to obtain a Mercedes and a million-dollar house is not because they are better equipped; it's because they carry a more positive attitude. Most people act as if success is their birthright. Because of this, many people find themselves falling into place with their careers, eventually losing sight of their higher aspirations.
Vision
Once you have the fight attitude, you need to start seeing the opportunities where they tie. It isn't easy, and isn't always obvious: one has to see through all the obstacles and fears. One day, when Mensah was a boy collecting water from the pond for his family to drink and bathe with, he became aware of a snake fight next to him. Instead of running scared, he faced his fear; that snake eventually slithered away. He had the drive to conquer such a fear, and became a mentally stronger person for it. Start visualizing where your potential is--plan it step-by-step. By doing this, you create a clear path for yourself and prioritize what must be done first.
Action
It is a critical first step to have a plan; then action must be taken on it. A plan is nothing, without putting it into action. Activity is merely movement; but action is motivated movement. "You cannot cower at the snake, because behind every snake lies opportunity for growth," says Mensah.
