Nearly 300,000 American children aged 4-17 years had received a diagnosis of autism as of 2003-2004, data from a pair of parent surveys show.

The estimated prevalence was 5.7 per 1,000 children and 5.5 per 1,000 children in the National Health Interview Survey and the National Survey of Children's Health, respectively.

Both surveys, reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, agreed on several points: that boys were 3.7 times more likely than were girls to have autism, that the peak prevalence of autism was noted from ages 6 to 11 years, and that Hispanic children had lower autism rates than did non-Hispanic white or black children (MMWR,…
