A row has broken out between the NFU and the British Potato Council over its public opposition to the recently-approved trials of genetically modified potatoes in the UK.
Defra secretary of state David Miliband gave the widely expected approval recently to BASF's application to begin five-year trials of blight resistant potatoes on two sites in Derbyshire and South Cambridgeshire.
While the NFU welcomed the announcement and said it would not "stand in the way of science", the BPC said it could not support GM trials because of the current "mistrust of the technology by consumers".
