It is with a heavy heart that I have to announce that this will be the final edition of Arable Farming magazine. A `strategic review' of its agricultural portfolio has meant that AF's parent company has decided not to publish the magazine beyond 2006.
AF isn't the first agricultural magazine to depart the scene in recent years and, most likely, it won't be the last as our industry continues to contract in terms of both the number of farmers and trade businesses. Sad though it is, we shouldn't be too surprised after the climate that has prevailed over the industry for the last 10 years.
It is fitting perhaps that all of AF's current farmer contributors - our six Talking Arable crew, including David Pearson with 27+ years service with the magazine! - Neil Unger in Australia and, of course, `Smithy' are all making an appearance in this final edition. Part of the charm (and challenge!) of this job was ploughing through their copy on a fortnightly basis and having a quick chat on the phone to clarify a couple of points here and there. It was also an honour to have worked closely with Peter Hepworth when he was a regular contributor to AF.
