An administrative decision to cut 10 sports teams in 2007 to save $550,000 in an athletics budget of $21 million at James Madison University has resulted in protests by student athletes, who mistakenly blamed Title IX for their teams' impending demise.
Female and male athletes protested outside of the Department of Education in Washington DC, with some students meeting with department officials later that day. The Independent Women's Forum, a group that opposes gender-equity legislation, and the College Sports Council, a group pushing for changes in Title IX, helped to organize and fund the JMU student protest.
Supporters of women's athletics explained that Title IX is not to blame for the cuts, and decried the manipulative role the two groups played. "They took advantage of a situation where students and parents were upset," said Donna Lopiano, who heads the Women's Sports Foundation.
