Volunteering: The percentage of college students who volunteer is rising, according to a report from the Corporation for National and Community Service. The group found that 30% of students ages 16 to 24 at American colleges volunteered, compared with 28% of students in 2002. Women led the volunteering efforts, with one-third of female college students donating time to causes, compared with 27% of male students.

"There seems to be a lot of things driving this uptick," said Robert Grimm, director of research and policy development for the group. He noted a surge in service-learning programs and 9/11 as possible reasons for the rise.

Alcohol arrests: Also on the rise is the number of alcohol-related campus arrests. The U.S. Department of Education reported that the number of such arrests rose 10% from 2003 to 2004. Info was collected from 6,730 schools nationwide that receive federal funding. Experts suggest that the rise in alcohol-related arrests was due to better law-enforcement rather than a surge in campus drinking.
