The University of Utah wants to make itself more attractive to women. Only 44% of its undergrads are women, compared with an average of more than 57% nationally. Even other schools in the predominately Mormon state do better: Women are at least 49% of students at these universities: Brigham Young, Utah State and Weber State.
The school's Presidential Commission on the Status of Women is sponsoring several discussions and will then recommend changes. Some of the culprits are:
* Cultural attitudes. Sophomore Jade Gray, who came from Maine, described the culture involving women as "a slap in the face." She referred to the expectation that women drop out of school when they get married as an example of the gender disparity. Another female doctoral student said when she arrived, "I was close to 30, with short hair, so everyone assumed I was either gay or mentally ill."
