Staff Sgt. John Hartman Jr., who was buried Friday, became the eighth troop from the region to be killed in the Iraq war. Here are brief biographies of the other military personnel from Manatee, Sarasota and Charlotte counties that have been killed.

LOCAL TIE: Attended Charlotte High School.

WHAT HAPPENED: Killed after being engaged in combat for more than six hours in Nasiriyah during the first week of the war.
