In a typical construction contract, an owner of real property enters into a contract with a contractor to construct a building. The contractor may hire subcontractors to perform some or all of the work. The contractor or the subcontractors will purchase materials from suppliers. These subcontractors and suppliers may hire others to furnish materials or perform the work. The North Carolina Lien statute provides an avenue for these parties to secure monies owed for their work.
