In the late 1800s, actor and writer Ed Harrigan and musician David Braham were tremendously popular figures on the New York stage. It was an era when minstrel and vaudeville traditions were peaking in popularity and would soon give way to a more modern style of musical theater. Harrigan and Braham were well positioned to take advantage of this development, and together they recycled their old vaudeville material into a series of musical plays, which met with huge success. For this delightful album, Irish folk legend Mick Moloney took fourteen songs from the Harrigan repertoire and imaginatively reconstructed them in a variety of settings, from neo-traditional ensemble folk ("The Regular Army O") to a sort of village band sound ("Are You There Moriarty?," "Patrick's Day Parade") with occasional excursions into ...
