Given what we know about Bela Bartok's deep aversion to urban life (and even, it could be argued, to modernity itself), it seems only natural that he would team up with the Expressionist writer Menyhert Lengyel to create the pantomime ballet, The Miraculous Mandarin. The dark and gruesome story line deals primarily with thuggery, prostitution, and elaborate murder in the inner city, and Bartok described the music he composed for it as "hellish." At its premiere in Cologne in 1926, the ballet was received with such vociferous animosity that it was immediately banned; Bartok never saw the work performed again.
