Rutine monitoring of blood sugar is not enough to keep diabetes patients within the target range. Even when patients use as many as nine finger sticks a day, less than 30% of their glucose tests show levels between 90 mg/dL and 130 mg/dL. Almost a third of tests come in above 180 mg/dL. Most of these patients are hypoglycemic about 2 hours a day.
