There have been a number of exhibitions this year celebrating the four hundredth anniversary of Rembrandt's birth. The last of a group of major Rembrandt exhibitions explores his bond with Jews and opens on November 10 at the Joods Historisch Museum (Jewish Historical Museum) in Amsterdam. Many stories, some of them without foundation, have arisen about his friendships with the Jewish-born philosopher Benedictus de Spinoza and with Rabbi Manasseh ben Israel. The Amsterdam in which Rembrandt lived had a large and prominent Jewish population, and over the years it has been asserted that there are echoes of Jewish mysticism (kabbalah) in some of his works. Other theories are that he used his Jewish neighbors as models for some of his religious and nonreligious paintings.
