On 19 May 2006, the national polio laboratory in Singapore reported isolation of a type 1 wild poliovirus from a stool sample of a female child aged 2 years and 5 months with acute flaccid paralysis (AFP). The child had developed paralysis in her home in Dutse, Jigawa State, northern Nigeria on 21 April 2006, before travelling to Singapore with her family to seek medical care. Together with Afghanistan, India and Pakistan, Nigeria is one of 4 remaining polio-endemic countries in the world where the indigenous circulation of wild poliovirus has never been interrupted.
