Krotzl presents an extremely detailed study of pilgrimage in Scandinavia, using diplomatic and epigraphic evidence, but based principally upon minute dissection of the miracle collections (involving 825 miracles) of fourteen Scandinavian saints. The variety of sources means that long-distance pilgrimages, to Jerusalem, Rome and Santiago, and to intermediate destinations like Canterbury, can be considered alongside local trips to Scandinavian shrines. One chapter is given over to an outline of the cult of each saint, with a statistical analysis of the types of miracle in each collection.
