Dec. 4--In a last-minute budget maneuver called "unfair" by their opposition, five members of the Montgomery City Council have chosen to increase funding for youth activities in their districts.
The increased appropriations go primarily to youth clubs in just five of the city's nine council districts while removing money from two city departments. The $2.1 million addition to the budget includes $1.4 million in discretionary money for council members, a move rejected by Mayor Bobby Bright and four council members.
Montgomery voters now must ask themselves if the plan reflects changing priorities or political payback.
