LONDON (AFX) - A new North Sea pipeline, which links the UK to the Netherlands, will start delivering gas to Britain today, said the UK's Department of Trade and Industry.
The 235 km Bacton-Balgzand (BBL) pipeline, the outcome of a treaty signed by the British and Dutch governments in 2005, will supply 8 pct of the UK's gas needs.
Trade Secretary Alistair Darling said the opening of the pipeline is "a further step to secure (the country's) energy supplies."
"Travelling more than 230 km under the North Sea, BBL (will deliver) commercial gas supplies from the Dutch continental shelf through to homes and businesses across the UK," he said.
