TOKYO (XFN-ASIA) - The core consumer price index, which excludes volatile prices of fresh food but includes energy prices, rose 0.1 pct from a year earlier in October, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications said.
It marked the fifth straight month of gain for the core CPI but the increase in prices was only half of the 0.2 pct economists were hoping for, based on a poll by the Nihon Keizai Shimbun.
Overall CPI rose 0.4 pct from a year earlier, the sixth consecutive monthly gain.
In September, core CPI rose 0.2 pct from a year earlier, while overall CPI jumped 0.6 pct.
The ministry in August changed the base year in computing the CPI to 2005 from 2000 as part of a regular update done every five years to correct for statistical upward drift. It also shuffled the CPI basket and the weighting of goods and services covered in the data to reflect more high-tech and health-conscious lifestyles.
