SEOUL, Dec 1 Asia Pulse - South Korean officials were confident Thursday about tackling the logistical difficulties arising from a possible strike by the country's truck drivers, as the country's unionized truck drivers threatened an industrial action for the following day.
The Korea Cargo Transport Workers Union, which represents about 1,000 truck drivers, announced earlier in the day that it will launch a strike at 4:00 a.m. Friday to demand an improvement of their freight operating systems and basic labor rights.
"We have established measures to immediately inject alternative logistic channels when suspicious indications surface," an official at the Ministry of Construction and Transportation said on condition of anonymity.
The scheduled industrial action, if launched, follows a similarly-scaled one in 2003, when unionized truck drivers blocked major ports and highways and caused havoc for the country's exports.
