NEW DELHI, Dec 1 Asia Pulse - Increasing wheat acreage in non-traditional growing states like Bihar and West Bengal in the next couple of years could make India a net exporter of the commodity, according to Agriculture Secretary Radha Singh.
"We can even become a net wheat exporter provided the acreage goes up in non-traditional states," she said.
Singh said the strategy of focussing on states like Bihar and West Bengal appears to show results as wheat coverage this Rabi season is higher by almost one million hectare.
India, for the first time in six years, was forced to import 5.5 million tonnes of wheat this year due to a procurement shortfall.
"Raising of the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for wheat by Rs 100 (US$2.24) per quintal seems to have yielded the desired result in the form of impressive increase in wheat acreage so far," the secretary said.
