The current Montgomery GI Bill stipend must be increased in order to keep pace with rising college costs, VFW announced in February. Because the monthly payment is inadequate, VFW officials say, the GI Bill is no longer an inducement to serve in the armed forces, and, therefore, is hurting recruitment.

"A booming economy and competing educational programs in the civilian sector have removed the attractiveness of military service as an alternative to pursuing a high-quality education upon leaving the service" said …
