The need for the bill mentioned above is self-evident. American students' knowledge of their own history is abysmal. According to a survey, "Losing America's Memory, Historical Illiteracy in the 21st Century," which was conducted at 55 colleges in December 1999 by the Roper Organization for the Council of Trustees and Alumni, 78% of the college seniors said they were not required to take any history courses.
