Internet-based news service LocalBusiness.com, which launched a Kansas City Web site four months ago, has suspended local coverage and laid off two of its editorial employees here, sources said.

The company, based in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., announced Monday that it was laying off 33 employees -- about 25 percent of its work force. LocalBusiness officials said the cuts were necessary because the company recently failed to raise as much as expected during a second round of financing and needed to reach profitability as soon as possible.
