Sarasota's City Commission on Monday gave a lethal injection to a Miami consultant's plan to add commercial space to the bayfront, ending months of debate about the future of Island Park.
The move follows a city Planning Board recommendation last month to shelve Andres Duany's proposal to develop a hotel, restaurants and possibly retail space at the waterfront.
But the City Commission, sitting as the Community Redevelopment Agency, went a step further: Rather than just spike Duany's idea, they removed it -- along with corresponding graphics and maps -- from the consultant's update to Sarasota's downtown master plan.
"There will be a ceremonial burning of those pages after the meeting," Commissioner Mary Quillin joked.…
