After more than 80 years in downtown Kansas City, Independent Electric Machinery Co. Inc. has moved to a new company-owned building in Kansas City, Kan. The space will permit more efficient operations than the building the company vacated.

David Launder, CEO of independent Electric, said the company's relocation was encouraged by a gentrification of the area around his former headquarters at 300 Southwest Blvd., which borders on the Freight House District. The district, originally populated by industrial businesses, now is attracting a trendy collection of art galleries and restaurants.

"Bang'em up industrial guys like me don't belong there," Launder said. …
